Doha Film Institute (DFI) has announced it is organising its first-ever online youth animation workshop. The “Stop Motion Animation 101” workshop offers a great opportunity for animation talents and enthusiasts between the age of eight and 17.

It will take place entirely on the web in support of distance training and learning efforts, said DFI on its official social media accounts yesterday. The workshop is split into two age brackets, kicking off on April 18 for participants aged 14 to 17 and running until April 23 from 3pm to 4.30pm.

It will be followed by the workshop catered to age eight to 13 years old from April 26 to May 2 from 3pm to 4.30pm. Those who wish to take part in the workshops may sign up by emailing DFI at: youth@ dohafilminstitute.com. The workshop will be delivered by Fadi Syriani, founder of Youth Animation Platform.

Born in Beirut, Syriani is an animation and comic artist, and a holder of a Master’s degree in Architecture and his work has been screened in several film festivals in Lebanon, Europe and Canada. He has already presented several youth animation workshops at DFI. Last year, he organised “Stop-Motion Shadow Animation Workshop” – a hands-on introduction for young people to the different techniques required for creating and producing a stop-motion animated film in which participants learned the tricks and techniques that help get a deeper appreciation of this form of artistic storytelling.

The workshop is part of DFI’s Youth Programme aimed at empowering young people to make films that address issues that are important to them. Featuring film appreciation, acting classes, and filmmaking and storytelling workshops, the Youth Programme is a journey into the process of creative collaboration and an opportunity for youth to speak up about the changes they want to see in their lives, their community and the world.

The online workshop follows the success of the recently concluded adapted online mentorship and support program for the 2020 edition of Qumra, DFI’s annual talent incubation event. The online format of the programme was introduced in lieu of the event which was cancelled amid global COVID-19 outbreak, a decision, which DFI said was made as part of its contribution to the responsible management and prevention of further spread of the virus in Qatar.
