Our scalp produces natural oils from the sebaceous glands called the sebum which maintains the quality of our hair and functions as a natural conditioner protecting each strand of our hair. We all produce sebum in our hair but some people overproduce it which results in greasy hair, hair which is difficult to style, dandruff and also dust particles sticking to your hair.

An oily scalp could be caused by stress, diet, hormonal imbalance or it could also be hereditary.

Here are 5 ways to prevent oily scalp:

Do not wash your hair every day:

If you have an oily scalp, you might think washing your hair more often would help you get rid of the excess oil but that’s not the actual case. Washing your hair regularly daily can cause your scalp to dry up and get your glands to produce even more natural oil. So wash your hair on every alternative day once.

Choosing the right shampoo:

Choose a shampoo that is made particularly for an oily and greasy scalp. Do not use shampoos that contain oil and greasy ingredients. Also, do not use shampoos that contain conditioner. You can look for shampoos that have tea tree oil in them because this helps in absorbing the excess oil in your scalp.

Use conditioner carefully:

Use the conditioner only on the lengths of your hair. Keep the conditioner away from the roots and scalp. And if you feel like your hair is not dry or brittle, then avoid using conditioner at all.

Avoid the heat:

Heat triggers the production of oil in your scalp. Avoid using heat products like curling iron, flat iron, etc. Also, avoid washing your hair with very warm water.

Maintain a good diet:

Avoid refined food and foods that have a lot of sugar and eat healthy and green vegetables, fruits and pulses.

These are the steps that will help you attain healthy hair if you have an oily scalp.
