New Delhi: Various kinds of diets offer a variety of health benefits and more often than not, the purpose of dieting is to reach fitness and health goals. However, in a pool of dieting options available, it may get overwhelming to pick the best one. Vegan and paleo diets are two of the most popular diets that are followed by several people and each has its own pros and cons. The vegan diet consists of grains, legumes, nuts, fruits, vegetarian, and non-dairy foods. The Paleo diet consists of meats, eggs, nuts, and healthy fats. Despite the kind of diet one chooses to follow, at the end of the day, it is essential to ensure your health. Therefore, before commencing with a diet plant, do your research and consult a nutrition expert to make sure that the diet is healthy for your body.

Vegan vs Paleo diet – Things to consider

  • Vegan diet: This diet is advantageous for people who prefer a vegetarian diet. Consumption of legumes, grains, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats is encouraged. However, this diet excludes the consumption of dairy, meat, and animal-based products. While this diet can help provide the body with plant-based protein and healthy fats, people who follow this diet may often experience a deficiency of vitamin B12 and Omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Paleo diet: This diet is advantageous for people who love eating meat. Consumption of lean meats, plants with a low glycemic index, and healthy fats is allowed. This diet, however, restricts the consumption of legumes, refined or whole grains, dairy, and certain fruits and vegetables. While this diet can help fulfil the daily protein needs and benefit diabetics and people working on weight management, the lack of vitamin D, calcium, dietary fibre, and vitamin B can affect the nutrition intake adversely.

Harvard suggested these principles of eating to maximize the health benefits of your diet:

  1. Include plants: Make sure that your fruits and vegetables and other healthy plant-based products get your daily dose of plant nutrients.
  2. Minimize processed food intake: Processed food is a source of unhealthy fats and must be avoided as it can lead to weight problems and cholesterol issues in the body.
  3. Eat protein: Protein is essential for the growth and development of the body and the brain. Make sure that you get your daily intake of protein through your diet.
