From the Golden Globes to the Oscars, awards season brought with it a glorious parade of designer fashion.
While there were many spectacular looks on the red carpets, it’s safe to say some of these outfits are not the kind of thing we can imagine wearing on a night out – we’re looking at you, Billy Porter, and your crystal-fringed mechanical hat at the Grammys.
On the other hand, there’s plenty of inspiration to be found for us mere mortals, thanks to the more wearable ensembles that also featured – whether you’re looking for wedding guest style ideas, a prom dress or black tie attire.
Here are four awards season fashion trends and where to shop them on the high street.
1. Pink
One of the biggest trends of awards season, we saw a huge spectrum of pink shades on show, from palest blush (actor Regina King and leading actress winner Laura Dern at the Oscars were a highlight), to brightest fuchsia (Little Women star Florence Pugh rocked a popping pink Dries Van Noten number at the Baftas).
Which hue is for you? These days, there are no rules, so pick a pink you love and wear it with pride.
2. Bows
While J-Lo’s Golden Globes dress divided opinion – some thought the gold and green confection made her look like a Christmas present – on the whole, we’re all on board with the oversized bow trend.
The bigger the better is the mantra here. But if you want to avoid the gift wrapping comparisons, keep it simple with one carefully placed bow on a form-fitting frock.
3. Vintage glamour
Old Hollywood glamour was another major trend, with stars like Renee Zellweger opting for a sleek sequinned column dress, while newcomer Beanie Feldstein chose a full-skirted floral gown.
The vintage glamour look works well for proms and black tie events – you wouldn’t want to risk upstaging the bride with a showstopping gown when attending a wedding, would you?
4. Black with a twist
Black was anything but boring at the Baftas, where Rooney Mara and Margot Robbie both donned floor-length dresses with interesting sleeve detailing.
You can do the same by looking for long black dresses with ruffles, lace or asymmetric necklines, complementing your gown with a celebrity-style updo and a bold red lip.
