Qatar’s Nuh Abdulkadir Ibrahim Anuh in action during high jump final yesterday.
Doha: Qatar, yesterday clinched two more silver medals on the final day of the 18th Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Gifu, Japan.
Bassem Mohamed Awad Hemeida and Nuh Abdulkadir Ibrahim Anuh finished second in the 400m hurdles and high jump respectively to finish the event on a high note.
In the 400m hurdles, Hemeida won the second place in a keenly contested race. Hemeida clocked a time of 50.55 to give Qatar the second silver medal at the Japan event as he finished behind host nation’s Yusuke Shirao, who topped clocking a time of 50.52.
Mahdi Pirjahan of Iran took the bronze.
Qatar’s third silver medal at the Asian junior event came in high jump with Anuh finishing behind Kyohei Tomori of Japan while Hao Zhang of China took the bronze.
Tomori topped a personal best 2.16m to win event over Anuh, who cleared 2.14m.
On Saturday, Saife Saifeldin secured his second gold medal at the event when he won the men’s 3,000m steeplechase, while on the opening day Saifeldin, gave Qatar the first gold medal by winning the 1,500m final. The third gold medal came in shot put with Moaaz Ibrahim topping the event.
Qatar had earlier won a silver medal in the men’s discus throw with Moaaz Mohamed Ibrahim clearing a distance of 61.5m.
Qatar, thus finished with a haul of three gold and an equal number of silver medals.
Meanwhile, running at the front for much of the race, 18-year-old Nozomi Tanaka dominated the women’s 3000m as she cruised to a 9:04.36 win, clipping nearly six seconds from the previous championships record of 9:10.17 set by Lan Lixin of China in 1997.
Tanaka, who has an 8:54.27 lifetime best set last year, was eighth over the distance at the 2016 World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz.
Yuna Wada was second in 9:14.13 to secure a 1-2 finish for Japan while further back, Liu Fang of China took bronze in 9:35.69.
Another meeting record came in the penultimate event, the women’s 4x400m relay, and again courtesy of the host nation.
Ayano Shiomi, Kasumi Yoshida, Natsumi Murakami and Ayako Kawata teamed to take a 3:38.20 win, shattering the previous mark of 3:39.24, set by China in 1997, by more than a second.
Kawata and Shiomi finished first and third in the 800m on Saturday.
