Weightlifter Fares Elbakh became Qatar’s first Olympic champion as he demolished two records in Tokyo on Saturday.
The 2019 world silver medalist dominated the men’s 96kg category. He set new records for the ‘Clean and Jerk’, at 225kg and the ‘Total Lift’ at 402kg.
Elbakh tried to set a new world record of 232kg for the clean and jerk but wasn’t able to make the lift.
Keydomar Vallenilla of Venezuela placed second, whilst Anton Pliesnoi of Georgia placed third, both having a total 387kg. Vallenilla was ranked above Pliesnoi because he made his best clean and jerk lift earlier in the competition.
