The Return of the Emir

A public welcome has been planned for the return of the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Khalifa, after people perform the maghrib prayers together today on the Doha Corniche.

After his successful tour to several countries and meeting with world leaders from Turkey, Germany, France and the US, he will be returning today. This return is of high importance as this is the first time he travelled abroad since the blockade began.

At the 72nd session of the UN general Assembly the Emir’s speech received praise when he stated the consequences of the unjust act of the blockade by its neighboring countries.  Sheikh Tamim also renewed a call for dialogue to end the Gulf’s worst diplomatic crisis, saying his country is open to resolving the dispute through talks without preconditions. He said “an unconditional dialogue based on mutual respect for sovereignty” was needed.

The Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani thanked Qataris and residents alike for their solidarity with Qatar and their stance thus stirring their spirit. This statement of thanks has made residents want to express their love and loyalty to the ruler.

The iconic movement within the country of “Tamim al-Majd” (Tamim the Glory) is the title of the portrait by contemporary Qatari artist Ahmed bin Majed al-Maadheed that has become the face of the Qatari resilience in the face of the ongoing blockade. This movement has gained popularity over the last 3 months spreading the words of solidarity, safety and trust on the stance during this blockade. Government and private institutions will also be pledging their trust in the ruler by displaying murals and this portrait on towers all over the Corniche. The same portrait has also been seen on vehicles and office buildings of Qataris and expatriates cars alike expressing their love and sincere support.

Ahead of his return into the country, ministry officials have also planned a warm welcome at the airport. The streets have been decorated with HH the Emir’s pictures and the Qatari flags. Television cameras could already be seen being set up on the Corniche this morning. Barricades and fences have been placed from the Sheraton to the Museum of Islamic Art closing of the celebrations in the country.
