A team of seven Qatari athletes will embark on their attempt to break records this weekend. The Team Qatar Channel Swim is aiming for a place in history by making an attempt to swim across the English Channel, enduring one of the most challenges feats.
This weekend will be the first attempt by Qatari Swimmers to cross the channel. The English Channel has only actually been conquered by 1484 swimmers and 757 relay teams over the past century and a half.
Team Qatar Channel Swim consists of seven members: Dr. Faleh Mohamed Ali, Dr. Khalid Al Jalham, Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwari, Dr. Jamal Rashid Al Khanji, Prof. Nasser Al Mohannadi, Fahad Al Buenain and Talal Al Emadi. The team has expressed how optimistic they are about the attempt they will make.
“We are all optimisitic and well-focused on reaching our target. Every one of us has put in a lot of effort and dedication to make this happen” -Dr. Jamal Rashid Al-Khanji
The swimmers will not only have to face the threats of over 600 vessels and 200 ferries that cross daily. They will also be challenged by the brutally low water temperatures, cold wings, oil slicks, and even highly possible rain or lightning during the swim. Crossing the Channel is no small feat, and it certainly gets even trickier considering the mounting conditions.
Team Qatar Channel Swim’s attempt will begin at Shakespeare’s Cliff or Samphire Hoe and will finish at or near Cap Gris Nez. The team will not be alone during this, with the accompaniment of an experienced pilot, captain Pete Reed, and his boat Rowena. The team’s director and Head Coach is Ryan Bowd, he’s an experienced coach working in conjunction with the team’s Channel Swim coach Tim Denyer (a world-class long-distance swimming coach who successfully crossed the English Channel himself in 2005).
