New student enrolment at the University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) has risen by nearly 22 percent this term as the campus welcomes 141 new students, including 17 new Qatari students. Qataris make up 14 percent of the overall student population.
A total of 408 new and returning nursing students begin classes this week at the UCQ.
“The start of a new academic year is an exciting time on our campus and we are honoured to welcome our new and returning students to the University of Calgary in Qatar,” said UCQ Dean, Dr Deborah White.
“We’re especially pleased to see so many new students who have chosen to pursue an education in nursing. Nurses perform a vital role in the healthcare system of Qatar and we will continue to work with our students to achieve their academic and professional goals.”

UCQ offers two paths to a Bachelor of Nursing (BN) degree – a four-year program for qualified high school graduates and a two-year program for nurses holding diplomas in nursing from recognised institutions. The University also offers a Master of Nursing (MN), with one stream particularly focused on Leadership. This is a program designed in collaboration with Qatar’s nursing community to further develop leaders in the profession.
The BN program educates students to become Qatar’s future clinical nursing leaders, preparing them for careers in healthcare. They care for patients and their families in the community, healthcare centres and the hospital. As future nurses they will inform clinical care health system policies and will be a key healthcare team member.
The MN program enhances leadership and management skills, critical analysis, and research skill of evidence to inform implementation of clinical and health system change – changes that can make a lasting impact in a chosen field. All of the University’s programs impart practical and theoretical knowledge from experienced nursing faculty with impressive academic and clinical expertise.
