In their effort to inspire and engage the audience with its collections, Qatar Museums has launched a challenge on its Instagram account requesting people to decipher images and draw conclusions.

Named as the ‘Visual Literacy Project’, the intention is to teach people how to examine and read images and apply analytical and critical thinking to visual materials. The first image was posted yesterday with audience already commenting their views and conclusions from the image. There are three questions to be answered. Qatar Museums Chairperson H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani tweeted about the initiative as, “We need to prepare new generations for a visually sophisticated world by teaching them to read images and express themselves through non-verbal forms of communication.”

She invited everyone to participate in the challenge to look closely at photos from Qatar Museums collection and answer the questions at @Qatar_Museums on Instagram.

Visual Literacy is all about developing a set of cognitive skills and strategies one needs to make sense of visual images.

The challenges are so structured that the answers are mostly embedded in the images themselves. What information is lacking can be largely inferred from looking closely and analysing pictures. Many aspects will also explore the viewer’s general knowledge of art, culture, geography and history, but solid knowledge in art history is by no means necessary.
