Sidra to welcome its first inpatients in January 2018
Qatar Foundation Member Continues to Deliver World-Class Healthcare to Local Community
Pelli Clarke Pelli, a U.S. architectural firm, created the design for Sidra Medicine. The cutting-edge structure of steel, glass and white ceramic tiles was chosen to provide the ideal environment for tranquility, privacy and healing. The design features a main hospital building and a separate outpatient clinic and incorporates three towering atriums that serve as indoor healing gardens. This is a unique feature that every patient will be able to view from his or her luxurious private room, and soothing water features, as well as an impressive art collection
Sidra Medical and Research Center, a member of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development and Qatar’s new hospital for children, young people, and women, will open its doors to its first inpatients in mid-January 2018, following approval by its board of governors, announced today, (18 October).
Sidra Medicine has three healing gardens that were created to serve as a visual and calming oasis in the main hospital. The vivid greens of the plants as well as the layout are structured to promote healing and respite. Patient rooms look out over the gardens and provide a view of plants and activity. Two of the gardens celebrate water with seating underneath a tree canopy to enhance the light filled, warm and inviting atmosphere. The other garden encourages play with colorful spheres arranged to invite children’s interaction.
To coincide with today’s announcement of its first inpatients, Sidra Medical and Research Center will change its name to Sidra Medicine.
The plaza level public play area was custom designed to reflect the regional culture of Qatar. We strive to create an environment that is accepting and encouraging of family participation in the patient care process, not just in the clinical areas but throughout the public spaces as well. Featuring interactive play structures resembling a dhow and a house – they invite curiosity and delight.
Sidra Medicine’s first inpatients will be by appointment only. Between January and May 2018, more inpatient services will launch in stages, and build up to offering its full range of services for children, young people, and women.
The mosque located near the main hospital of Sidra Medicine, provides visual harmony, as well as visual variety, through the use of form, stone and architectural details. The abundance of natural light and calming colors in the interior space creates a welcoming, peaceful environment for contemplation and prayer.
Peter Morris, CEO of Sidra Medicine, said: “Today’s announcement is a major milestone in the realization of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser’s vision to create a beacon of learning, discovery, and exceptional care, ranked among the top academic medical centers in the world.”
