Step # 1:

Don’t be in a rush! Your foundation is the crux of your entire makeup look. Spend enough time in finding it, I bet it will be all worthy.

Step # 2:

Never, ever, test the foundation on your hands! I repeat. Never. Ever.

I know, it’s the first thing the sales lady would do for you and something you’ve been practicing since long. But your hand’s skin (color, texture, sensitivity) is different than your faces (Duh.) You will never be able to find the perfect shade by checking them on your wrists.

Step # 3:

If you’re already wearing some makeup, wipe off a small patch just above your jawline to test the foundation (use the cleansing water available at the store). Never try it on your existing makeup as that would obviously lead to finding an incorrect shade.

Step # 4:

To the cleansed patch, add different foundation shades in vertical lines, extending from just above your jawlines to slightly below, going towards the neck. Blend the shades and pick the one that matches your face and neck together.  Mismatching the two would either leave you with a head floating on a different body or you using half of the bottle on your neck to make up for it.

Step # 5:

Learned from hard experience, this one is probably most important. Always go in for choosing it at the start of your mall trip. Once you’ve followed all steps till #4 and found your perfect shade, ask them to save it and go on to finish your mall trip. After about an hour or so check your face again (for the foundation shades you tried) and then return to purchase the foundation.

Why? Because whether they claim it or not almost all foundations oxidize based on their composition and the oils in your skin. Oxidation is a phenomenon where the foundation reacts with the oxygen in air to change its color to a darker shade. Just like your half-eaten apple would.

If you find after an hour or so, your perfect shade foundation hasn’t changed. Then Voila! Grab and Run. But if the foundation has now transformed into a contour instead (turned into a darker shade), buy a shade or two lighter to avoid this tragedy post-purchase.

We hope these steps help you in the life-size task of foundation hunt!
