Women in Nigeria are loving off-the-shoulder tops and cropped trousers are big Down Under.
But unlike the Nineties, today we have social media and with that comes an inherent compulsive need to share our outfits and looks online. This year alone the #ootd (outfit of the day) hashtag was used a staggering 18 million times on Instagram.
With so many of us sharing so much, we’ve unknowingly created a treasure trove of data, that specialist fashion brand Long Tall Sally have used to monitor the most popular trends of the year from different countries across the globe.
What they found was pretty enlightening so here are the most important trends according to what we’ve been sharing on Instagram this year.
1. U.K: the metallic shoe
The metallic shoe started its fashion life on the catwalks of Celine and Lacoste and shiny shoes, boots and heels have been seen on the feet of many fashionistas across the country this year. Footwear in gold, silver, copper and every other metallic colour under the sun have been tagged 6,369 on Instagram.
2. South Korea: oversized sleeves
This year saw silhouettes and hemlines being adapted and altered in South Korea. The country loves oversized sleeves, from voluminous puffs to dramatic over-long cuffs, tagging the trend a massive 15,638 times.
3. Thailand: millennial pink
Is it baby pink? It most certainly isn’t! Millennials are known for changing the status quo and this year an enture new colour was created – Millennial pink. We don’t really care what it’s called, and we’re not even sure if a Millennial named it, but it’s pretty and with 15,411 posts, Thailand agrees too.
4. France: white tees
Surprisingly in France, home of the fashion capital of the world, it’s the humble white tee that came out as the most popular over the past year with 6,169 posts since January. Simple and chic, all you need to do is pair it with a pair of jeans and you’ve got yourself an Instagram-worthy outfit.
5. Japan: berets
Francophiles have been taking over the streets of Japan, with 3,259 colourful berets being tagged on Instagram by Japanese fashionistas.
6. Italy: belted coats
Italy saw 7,650 uses of hashtags around sophisticated belted coats. And its not the only country having a fashion moment for outerwear – Sweden, USA and Denmark all saw coats and jackets as their most popular item of the year on Instagram.
7. Sweden: puffer jackets
Sweden seems to be a little more casual than Italy, with 2,394 embracing cosy yet chic puffer jackets. Well, it can get pretty cold in Sweden!
8. Nigeria: off-the-shoulder tops
Nigeria couldn’t get enough of off-the-shoulder tops and dresses – teaming the sleek silhouette with bold colours and prints 2,420 times.
9. Colombia: tassel earrings
This one’s a biggie and has pretty much taken over the world. Paired with evening dresses for a night out or jeans and a simple tee for a chilled day, tassel earrings will glam up any outfit effortlessly. So it’s no surprise they’ve been instagrammed 7,257 times in Columbia.
10. Germany: panelled suits
A massive 14,049 posts of women adorning power suits have been recorded in Germany.
11. Senegal: voluminous skirts
Big, voluminous skirts were all the rage this year, especially in Senegal with 6,204 posts.
12. Spain: straw bags
Wicker, straw and rattan bags have to be one of the biggest trends of 2017, they’re chic yet carefree, and 7,793 pics were uploaded in Spain alone.
13. UAE: embellished clutches
The right embellished clutch has the ability to transform your look from day to night in seconds. With so many beautiful designs available they proved incredibly popular in the Middle East.
Say what you want about 2017, this snapshot of style from across the globe shows clearly that women everywhere relished in many of the same major fashion trends.
