World Water Day, is about water and climate change – and how the two are inextricably linked. Adapting to the water effects of climate change will protect health and save lives.
Humans need water to survive, as do all the systems we rely on: sanitation, healthcare, education, business and industry. Action plans to tackle climate change need to be integrated across different sectors and coordinated across borders. And they must have one thing in common: safe and sustainable water management.
The World Water Day 2020 campaign explains statements such as:
- We cannot afford to wait. Climate policy makers must put water at the heart of action plans.
- Water can help fight climate change. There are sustainable, affordable and scalable water and sanitation solutions.
- Everyone has a role to play. In our daily lives, there are surprisingly easy steps we can all take to address climate change.
Wondering how one can save water at an individual level? Here are some quick, smart tips for you to follow at your own home, to keep this natural resource alive and flowing for generations to come:
Use a high-efficiency washer
Washing laundry no doubt requires gallons of water. However, buying washing machines that are energy star-certified can help save water, as they consume up to 40% less water than the ordinary machines. Also, using front-loading washers can also be beneficial for water conservation as they require lesser water compared to the top-loading ones.
Deposit the water
Many times, we keep the tap flowing while brushing, shaving, or simply waiting for the geysers to pump out hot water. The leftover water from washing vegetables or coming out of a RO purifier also goes out as a waste. However, instead of wasting the water away, it can be stored and reutilised wherever water quality is not a major concern, like gardening.
Use a dishwasher
Using a dishwasher will keep you from wasting a lot of water, as compared to washing utensils with your hands. Use the dishwasher once it is full of dishes, so that all the dishes are washed together. While buying a dishwasher, make sure to check the star energy rating; an optimal washer uses less energy and saves up to 30% of the household water.
Keep a tap on Leaks
This is one of the best ways to control the unnecessary wastage of water. Heard of the phrase “little drops make mighty oceans”? Well, even a drop-by-drop leak to a tap can fill an entire bucket overnight! Therefore, it is essential to prevent and fix the leakages from faucets and other homely water appliances.
Add aerators or flow regulators
Aerators are usually fixed at the tip of water taps. The main task of aerators is to ensure the same flow rate of water. It is advisable to add aerators into the faucet stream to reduce the pressure and save excessive water from flowing. Nowadays, there are aerators with flow restrictor mechanisms which can be highly beneficial for home use.
Water plants early in the morning
Experts recommend watering trees and gardens during the morning hours, when the temperatures are lower. This helps minimise water evaporation from the Sun, and keeps the plants cool for long. This technique is also best for areas with dry climate. Also, use mulch for flower beds or pots to trap the moisture for a longer period of time.
In addition to these tactics, you can always adopt several other basic conservation methods, and even go out of the way and learn a few advanced techniques in order to preserve what is arguably the most important resource for all life on Earth.
