As the week comes to an end, Qatar and its people are getting ready to celebrate the much anticipated day of the year – The National Day of Qatar.
In 2016, Qatar had refrained from many of the usual celebratory events out of solidarity for Aleppo. And in 2017, Qatar is under siege which makes this year’s celebrations even more important and unique. This year’s theme is “Promise of Prosperity and Glory” and the celebrations are to kick off on December 9th onwards.
Although the National day is celebrated throughout Qatar and the decorations and preparations have already begun in every corner, the site of Darb Al Saai is an important feature as it is bustling with the most interesting tents that host several activities and events under the various government and public entities of Qatar.
Following are some of these events set for the duration of 10 days, i.e. from December 9th to 20th.
AL BIDAA
If the history of Qatar excites you and if you have been curious about the traditional coastal environment of Al Fareej and the old perfumery and boat making shops, this is the place to be. A glimpse of history along with a lot of games and activities is what makes AL Bidaa unique.
AL EZBA
Al Ezba is probably the most thrilling of all the events as it includes camel riding! Yes! You can ride a camel and even learn how to tie it up professionally. You never know when that may come handy!
SOUQ WAQIF
This popular market will be booming with Qatari products and local shops of Qatari entrepreneurs. A little bit of patriotism as you shop won’t hurt now, will it?
THE MINISTRY OF MUNICIPALITY AND ENVIRONMENT
It is very important that we remain aware of the efforts that the country makes in keeping itself clean and safe for its residents. The Ministry of Municipality and Environment aims to teach exactly this, but in a fun and intriguing way. Many events for children will also be hosted in the same tent alongside exhibitions on important concepts for Adults.
AL RAIL
Each one of us has been awaiting the Qatar Rail project to be completed. Meanwhile, here is a miniature model for you and your family to experience and enjoy in the events of the Parade.
AL MASEER
The Parade will include Qatar’s horses, camels, classic cars, traffic patrols, motor cycles and many more. It’s bound to instil a sense of patriotism on its onlookers as it makes its way through the heart of Darb Al Saai.
Darb Al Saai is vast and the number of events and tents planned for this year is over 20. It would be a very long list to include all of them and besides, we do not want to ruin all the suspense.
Tent Timings:
Sunday – Thursday: 8am – 12pm / 4pm – 10pm
Friday: 4pm – 10pm
Saturday: 8am – 12pm / 4pm – 10pm
Apart from this 10 day festival, the other two mega events that all of Qatar is impatiently waiting for is happening at Corniche, on the National Day itself, December 18th.
We suggest you reach there as early as possible because when we say “all of Qatar” we mean ALL OF QATAR.
NATIONAL PARADE
The National Parade is conducted in the daytime on every single National day and yet it never seizes to amaze us. The one hour long march includes the troops of various military sectors, displays by the air force and navy and events that commemorate the rich heritage of the State of Qatar. With the present scenario in the nation, this glorious event will be an awe inspiring one for sure. The Corniche will be closed before 7 am so be sure to grab your seats early!
AL SHARAKHIAT
The National day is the only day that Fireworks are held in Qatar and it is definitely worth the entire wait. The event starts at 8 pm and is a breath taking sight as there is nothing more fascinating than the night sky being lit by the many colours over the Arabian Sea.
