Contemporary abstract artist Hala El Attar visually manifests energy through her unique take on fluid art integrating different mediums and styles to achieve artworks that burst with colour and life, now on show at W Doha’s Art 29 gallery.
Dubbed “Different Dimension: An Energetic Place”, the exhibition which opened yesterday showcases 11 fascinating works by El Attar and marks a number of firsts for the young artist.
“This is my first solo exhibition in Doha which is very special because it’s my first time to combine figurative and abstract art making this show unique,” El Attar told The Peninsula. Delving into the theme of space and energy, the artist aims at creating “an atmosphere that allows the viewers to feel the flow of energy because at the end of the day this is what the universe is built on and what connects us all.”
“Basically all my paintings are about energy and trying to capture it, how I think it would look like,” she said. On how she achieves her goal of making the artworks exude with energy, she said “”It is through my unique abstract style in which I combine a lot of different mediums and to achieve that, it needs a lot of experience on how to have all these mediums blend together to get this kind of style” she explained.
Unlike other artists who use only one medium, pouring the paint and allowing them to dry, El Attar uses her paintbrush to work on minute details to achieve what she wanted in the piece. “Actually pouring art is a style which is very special in its own way because on one side you can’t really control the outcome, but what I do is work on the small structures with my hand,” she said.
It took around five years for El Attar to achieve her unique artistic touch on fluid art, though she’s open to change as she journeys through art and life, “but right now I’m really fine with this style.” Unlike her previous works, this exhibition displays some works where the artist blends abstraction with figuration, in addition to using colours other than blue which is her favourite colour to work on. On why she likes blue, she said: “It’s hard to explain. I love the ocean. I love water. I really get inspired by it, so in all my paintings you’ll find a little bit of blue even if you don’t expect it. You come closer and you’ll see the blue colour,” she explained.
Originally from Aachen, Germany, El Attar studies Art Therapy in Bonn and spends her free time expanding her knowledge and creating pieces which invoke and inspire. She has already exhibited her works in London, Berlin, Barcelona and now in Doha. The exhibition is open for public viewing until January 20 from 10am to 10pm at Art 29 – an exciting space that provides platform to up and coming local, regional and international artists to showcase their work and aspirations to the community.
