W Doha Hotel & Residences, the first luxury lifestyle hotel in Qatar, is delighted to host the works of local artist Fahad Al Obaidly at the property’s in-house Art 29 gallery. The exhibition titled “Exploring Expression” will be inaugurated on December 16th, and will be open to the public until January 16th 2018 from 9.00am to 7.00pm.

As an artist with multiple interests, Fahad has donned the creative role of a fashion designer, filmmaker, stylist and curator with impeccable finesse. His body of work regularly embodies a state of instability due to the loss of personal identity resulting from the stagnant conformation of his environment.

With the “Exploring Expression” exhibition, Fahad expatriates the crisis of identity on to the canvas. Using bold colors and exaggerated figures, the artist poignantly expresses the perception of his reality while searching for an escape from the artificial and conventional. Each artwork is inspired by his personal journey in the contemporary and globalized society, fortified by his intense love for culture and heritage.

The artist’s work has been previously showcased at the Katara Art Centre in 2015, followed by a group exhibition at the Doha Fire Station in 2016. This year, Fahad gained international exposure at Berlin’s legendary Kraftwerk space, where his work was showcased alongside other Qatari artists as part of a large-scale exhibition “Contemporary Art-Qatar” presented by Qatar Museums (QM) to mark the finale of the Qatar Germany 2017 Year of Culture programme.

Fahad’s upcoming solo exhibition at the hotel’s Art 29 gallery will present viewers a unique opportunity to explore the world he imagines – free from boundaries and full of infinite belongings.

Art 29 has been established to inspire and nurture creativity by showcasing the works of emerging local, regional and international artists. The expansive gallery has previously featured prominent Qatari names including Ahmed Bin Majed Al Maadheed, the artist behind the iconic “Tamim-al-Majid” portrait, Abdulwahed Al-Mawlawi who is known for documenting local artistic expression from the late 1990s to 2002, and most recently Lulu M – a self-taught artist recognized for her minimalist abstract compositions.

The gallery also played host to the photography works of students at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar and the “Currents” exhibit by Emergeast, the first online art gallery that brings together emerging Middle Eastern artists and young collectors under one umbrella.
