The 2022 Building is brain child of Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani. “The idea came from the day one when FIFA announced Qatar the host of 2022 FIFA World Cup,” Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani told The Peninsula on the sidelines of the opening ceremony.

He said that idea was to develop a building to be a legacy for this giant international sport event which could be the shape of the world cup trophy or year. “Finally we decided to shape the building with year of 2022 FIFA World Cup converting the idea into this iconic building,” said Al Thani.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani, said: “There is no doubt that December 2 represents a great day for us in the history of Qatar, being the day when our beloved country witnessed winning the right to host  2022 FIFA World Cup.”

He said that the idea of building 2022 precisely in 2010 came during his studies abroad, where he was following Blatter the then FIFA president pulled Qatar’s name from the FIFA voting envelope in 2010.

Talking to The Peninsula, Mohamed bin Hammam said that 2022 Building is a heritage for future, great achievement of private sector as a Qatari. “I am proud of the idea and construction and of the people who have invested in the project to present something for Qatar 2022.”
