Officials from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) are advising patients who are currently taking metformin medicines (known under the commercial name Glucophage) prescribed and dispensed by HMC pharmacies to continue taking these medicines and not to cease use of the medication.
The healthcare provider is assuring all patients that metformin medications provided by HMC have been imported from their original manufacturer, based in France, and noted that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have both announced that the pharmaceutical product, which is also distributed across the US and Europe, does not contain the impure substance NDMA.
The official source has also confirmed that HMC supports the Ministry of Public Health’s (MoPH) statement published on 10 December 2019 and the related measures taken by the Ministry to verify that the medicine is free of NDMA, but reinforced that all metformin medications provided by HMC are safe.
