While it’s tempting to turn to products from the freezer and cereal aisles for the most important meal of the day—especially when mornings are hectic—a hot, homemade breakfast is just minutes away.

Here are four ideas your kids will love that can be made in five minutes or less.

French Toast in a Mug

Melt one tablespoon of butter in a large, microwave-safe mug in the microwave (about 30 seconds). Tilt the mug to coat all sides with melted butter. Add 1/4 cup milk, 1 egg, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract and a splash of maple syrup; stir to combine. Tear two slices of whole-wheat raisin bread into pieces and press into the milk mixture. Microwave 90 seconds.

Overnight Steel Cut Oats

One-minute oatmeal in the microwave is easy and convenient, but with a little – and we mean little – prep work, you can serve a hot bowl of oats in the morning that is packed with nutrition and flavor. While you’re cleaning up dinner, put four cups of water into a pot and bring to a boil. Add 1 cup of steel cut oats, a pinch of salt and cook for one minute. Turn off the heat, stir, cover and leave it – right there on the stove. In the morning, warm up the oats and stir in your favorite toppings. We like chocolate hazelnut spread and dried cherries, but you could also do pumpkin puree and toasted pipits or a handful of nuts and berries.

Grilled PB & J

It’s hard to go wrong with peanut butter and jelly. And though the classic sandwich can serve just fine on its own as a quick breakfast, try bringing up the temperature to give it something special. After making the sandwich, add two pats of butter to a skillet and let is melt over medium heat. Grill the sandwich on both sides (about two minutes) to get a nice golden brown. For a little extra warmth, add cinnamon to the butter.

Loaded Egg Potato

OK, this recipe requires a bit of planning – but just a little bit. Next time you make baked potatoes for dinner, throw a few extra in the oven. The next morning, warm up the potato in the microwave for a minute as you coat a bowl of non-stick spray. Scramble an egg in the bowl. When the potato is warm, swap it out for the egg. Cook for 30 seconds and stir. Cook for another 15 to 30 seconds. Cut the potato down the middle and sprinkle cheddar cheese. When the egg is done, put it in the potato. Top with salsa, sour cream and crumbled bacon if you just happen to have it in the fridge.
