Nelson Mandela, the former South Africa

Nelson Mandela will forever remain a global symbol of human rights. His strife against South Africa’s apartheid system of segregation will always remain etched in our memories. But there is so much more to Mandela.

Mandela represents an emblem of hope and struggle in the path of justice. His never-ending battle for human rights will always remind us to never give. It will always remind us to do whatever it takes and however we can in pursuit of justice. Mandela believed in a brighter future. One where freedom was for all and democracy was pure. He fought long and hard for this ideal, and his overwhelming passion and determination never once waivered.

On this day, the world remembers the exemplary man Nelson Mandela was. The Nelson Mandela Foundation has dedicated this year’s Mandela Day to action against poverty. They plan to honour his leadership and devotion by fighting poverty and promoting social justice for all.

London’s Southbank Centre have joined with the Apartheid Museum and Anti-Apartheid Movement Archives to launch an exhibition exploring the leader’s legacy. The exhibition explores Mandela’s life and times as a marking of the centenary of his birth.

The UN are also running an exhibition at their New York headquarters. Titled “Building on the Legacy of Nelson Mandela-NYC,” the exhibition started last week and will end on September 2nd.

While the world takes this centenary of his birth as a chance to reflect on all that Nelson Mandela has achieved, we’d like to leave you with this thought. Today, we honour the change he inspired, the great man he was, and the true guiding light he will forever be.
