The Molokhia could be served as a bowl of soup or a main dish. Either way its a great Egyptian recipe that is easy to make and also tasty. This dish of healthy greens is common in Egypt and packed with vitamins and nutrients.

Most people seem to agree that the taste of the soup is delicious, but opinions may differ because its texture. Be brave and take a spoon full of molokhia and you will be surprised with the taste.

This popular Egyptian soup made with minced Jute leaves is nutritious and delicious, especially with rice and chicken. Or you can eat it with the Egyptian bread.

The origins of the dish are said to be in ancient Egypt, where it’s still popular to this day. In the Egyptian preparation, the Molokhia leaves are stripped from the stems, then minced. It’s cooked with coriander, garlic and butter and most of the time, served with chicken and rice.

Recipe:

Ingredients for 2-3 bowls:

  • 1 frozen pack of minced Molokhia. ( don’t forget to defrost before cooking)
  • 4-6 minced garlic cloves.
  • 1 ½ cups of chicken broth.
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil or one small butter cube.
  • ½ teaspoon of salt.
  • 1 ½ teaspoon of Coriander powder.

Instructions:

First, you heat the chicken broth in a medium saucepan and add the salt, when it is about to boil carefully drop the Molokhia pack in the broth. Stir with a silicone spoon. Be careful not to boil the molokhia.

Meanwhile, in a small pan, heat up a tablespoon of oil ( or you can use butter ) on medium heat. Add the coriander powder and add the minced cloves of garlic and saute while stirring frequently until golden brown. Be careful not to burn the garlic!

Once the garlic and coriander are ready, pour it into the molokhia pot. If you get a satisfying noise then you’re doing it right.

Serve it with bowls and present bread and rice with it .. if you add roast chicken you will have a  complete Egyptian meal.
